Dr. Raymond McKie, Ph.D., L.Psych. is a licensed clinical psychologist based in Vancouver, British Columbia. He holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Ottawa and is currently completing a second Ph.D. in Community Psychology at Wilfrid Laurier University, reflecting his interest in understanding mental health within the broader contexts of relationships, identity, community, and social environments. He also holds degrees in psychology from the University of Guelph and Trent University.
Dr. McKie is trained as a generalist clinical psychologist, with experience in the assessment and treatment of a broad range of psychological, emotional, behavioural, and interpersonal concerns. He provides psychotherapy and psychological assessment to children, adolescents, and adults, as well as psychotherapy to couples. His practice addresses concerns such as anxiety, depression, stress, emotional regulation, grief and loss, interpersonal difficulties, and adjustment to significant life changes.
His clinical training and professional experience span hospitals and other health-care settings, university-based psychology clinics, schools, and community-based services. He completed his clinical psychology residency with Vancouver Coastal Health, where he received specialized training in sexual health, trauma-focused treatment, and outpatient mental health services. His broader supervised clinical training has included individual and couples psychotherapy, child and adolescent mental health, and psychological and psychoeducational assessment.
In addition to his broad generalist training, Dr. McKie has developed particular expertise in the following areas:
-
Psychodiagnostic assessment: Conducting comprehensive psychological assessments to better understand emotional, behavioural, cognitive, and mental health concerns. Assessments may involve clinical interviews, standardized psychological measures, diagnostic clarification, and individualized recommendations to guide treatment planning and ongoing care.
-
Child and adolescent mental health: Supporting children and adolescents experiencing emotional, behavioural, developmental, academic, social, and family-related difficulties. His supervised clinical experience includes work with children, adolescents, and families through the University of Ottawa's Centre for Psychological Services and Research, the Child Adolescent and Family Centre of Ottawa (CAFCO), and the Western Québec School Board. This work has included psychotherapy, consultation, and psychoeducational assessment of learning, cognitive functioning, and related academic and developmental concerns.
-
Trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): Providing evidence-based treatment for trauma arising from interpersonal experiences, occupational exposure, and other distressing events. His specialized training includes work through the BC Operational Stress Injury Clinic during his residency, as well as clinical experience in Ontario, supporting police officers, military personnel, and veterans. Dr. McKie is also a Medavie Blue Cross provider for eligible clients. His trauma-focused services are available to individuals from all backgrounds and are not limited to first responders or veterans.
-
Couples and relationship therapy: Supporting couples and individuals navigating communication difficulties, recurring conflict, emotional disconnection, trust concerns, intimacy challenges, and significant relationship transitions. His work explores attachment patterns, emotional and relational needs, and the interactional patterns that can contribute to distress. Drawing particularly on emotion-focused approaches, he helps partners develop greater mutual understanding, strengthen emotional connection, and navigate relationship challenges more effectively.
-
Sexual health and sex therapy: Supporting individuals and couples experiencing concerns related to sexual desire, arousal, erectile functioning, sexual pain, intimacy, and the psychological aspects of sexual health conditions. This includes concerns such as vaginismus/female sexual pain, Peyronie's disease, and changes in sexual functioning following cancer treatment or other medical interventions. His specialized training includes clinical work with the BC Centre for Vulvar Health and urology-related services during his Vancouver Coastal Health residency.
-
LGBTQ+ mental health: Supporting individuals and couples navigating sexual orientation, identity development, coming out, minority stress, interpersonal relationships, and community belonging. His clinical work is complemented by extensive academic and research experience focused on sexual and gender minority health and well-being.
-
Tourette syndrome and tic disorders: Assessing and treating motor and vocal tics, associated emotional and behavioural concerns, and related difficulties. His work includes specialized behavioural interventions such as Comprehensive Behavioural Intervention for Tics (CBIT).
Dr. McKie's therapeutic approach is collaborative, compassionate, and grounded in evidence-based psychological practice. He draws from a range of therapeutic modalities, including cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), cognitive processing therapy (CPT), prolonged exposure (PE), emotion-focused therapy (EFT), and other behavioural, acceptance-based, and experiential approaches. Treatment is individualized to reflect each client's concerns, circumstances, strengths, and goals.
Central to his practice is the understanding that psychological well-being is shaped not only by individual experiences, but also by relationships, family dynamics, physical health, culture, and broader social environments. He strives to provide a warm, inclusive, affirming, and non-judgmental therapeutic environment where clients feel comfortable exploring difficult experiences, developing greater self-understanding, and working toward meaningful change.
